June 05, 2018

The first Wednesday in June is Global Running Day! It’s a celebration observed around the world that is meant to motivate everyone to get up and get moving. Speed doesn’t matter. How far you go doesn’t matter. The point is to get out there and take part. Everyone, even those who can’t run, can find a way to have fun, be active, and inspire others to join the movement. Here are a few ways you can participate in Global Running Day on the first Wednesday of June, or every day.

  • Run a lap. Most people live near a school, recreation center, or track of some kind. Take a lap or ten. Bring friends and challenge each other to a few laps, or create teams and run a relay.
  • Jog around the block. Not everyone has the time to find a track. But most people live in a neighborhood with blocks. Take a brisk walk or jog around the neighborhood for a few minutes.
  • Take your dog for a quick jaunt or a long hike. Dogs need exercise as much as we do. Bring your pup with you for this special celebration.
  • Make a pledge. In 2017, over 1.2 million people in 187 countries pledged to run 8.2 million miles for Global Running Day.
  • Pledge with a team.Making a pledge with a team is a way to bring accountability to the event. Creating accountability partners and teams can keep everyone in the game.
  • Join a community event. Nearly every city has fun runs each weekend throughout the summer. And for GLobal Running Day, there are probably plenty of fun runs to choose from. Whether it’s a 1k, 5k, 10k, or a marathon, get out there and move with your community.
  • Join a virtual group. This celebration is also called Virtual GLobal Running Day, which means there’s a way to join a virtual run. Sign up atStrava. Then turn on your GPS and go for a run during a specified time. Your route will be shared with your virtual team, and you can all cheer each other on.
  • Sign up for a future running event. Many people have the desire to run a marathon someday. Others want to join a triathlon. Others just want to complete a memorable race of some kind. This is the perfect reason to make the commitment. Find a race and register. Set up a training schedule. Maybe even hire a trainer. Either way, making the commitment and penning a plan is a great way to observe Global Running Day.

The most important thing about Global Running Day is to move. We don’t need to overthink it. And we don’t need special equipment or a bunch of money. Just do what comes naturally, and bring people, or your dogs with you.
